Weird science:
The secrets of architecting online happiness

Human beings are weird creatures. We’re often irrational, we often exhibit poor judgment, and we’re often wildly overconfident. Wikipedia lists 169 different types of these cognitive biases, and there’s a burgeoning amount of research looking at how to take advantage of them.

This year’s World IA theme, ’Architecting Happiness’, got me thinking. Is it possible to similarly architect our sites and apps so that they make people happier? I think the answer is yes, and I’m going to show you how thanks to science!

(Starring cocaine, some poetry (oh noetry!), the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and the most romantic quote you’ve ever heard from Albert Einstein.)
